LIQUID WAY TO ACTION: POLAND 10 – 20 JULY 2017

The Liquid Way to Action will fuse Studio Matejka’s well established creative training and research process with the performers’ own experiences to uncover personal forms of expression. The participants will explore the rigorous and experimental workspace that defines our studio. Through a laboratory model that seeks to break the borders between dance, dramatic theatre and other forms of performing arts, we aim to unlock the potentiality of beginnings and places, where action is born.

The intensive session, divided into stages, will be devoted to the development of skills in physical performance and will support the creation of individual scores. Those created movement structures will be used as material for individual etudes and finally a common performance. This workshop continues in our aim to support individual, creative artistic proposals in relation to the Studio Matejka approach. We wish to create a space for extraordinary theatrical ideas.

We invite into our workshop professionals and semi-professionals experienced in dance and physical theatre, as well as artists from other disciplines (fine art, stage design, music, dramaturgy).

The workshop will be held in English with Matej Mateka, Sam Alty Natalia Pieczuro and members of Studio Matejka. As the practice is based on the platform of listening and communication through the body and intuitive experience, verbal explanation will be kept to a minimum.

POLITICS OF PRESENCE: TURKEY 8 – 15TH AUGUST 2017

This workshop is addressed to artists/performers, who work with the body and voice, to explore the political relationships of their work.

In our contemporary globalised society our attention is a commodity bought and sold for the interests of different political, ideological and corporate agendas. How we think, leads to how we feel, which leads to how we act. If our thinking is manipulated our actions will be too.

This workshop seeks to become sensitive of the moments when we are reactive rather than responsive, when the force of habit and conditioning takes over. What new possibilities and choices can arise then? How does that affect our art? How is that art received by our audience? By our society?

In the journey of the artist we can become aware of the power that arises when we are connected with our heart, with our truth, to be fully present and in a state of flow. What political impact does an artistic expression have when it is from this place inside ourself?

Living in this time of rapid change and crisis, what need does society have of the artist? In my opinion it has never been needed more.

DANCE OF LIKENESS – TRADITIONS WITHIN ME: POLAND 22 SEPT – 1 OCT 2017

Through intense physical experience we will enter an intimate process involving memories and perceptions of our own life and the life of our ancestors. We will blend real stories with fictional ones in order to balance imagination with reality, truth with deception. It is an opportunity for those who are wishing to cross other personal borders and find out how to get the most out of it towards creating theatrical actions and unique forms of storytelling. The workshop is open to all participants regardless of theatrical or movement experience.

How deep can dance take you into yourself? How often do we realise that we repeat things that our parents, grandparents and earlier generations passed onto us? We move like our mothers, we touch like our grandfathers… Would we dance the same way to the music they danced to? And how would they dance to the music we listen to today? In this new workshop we will allow each other to go deeper into traces of traditions inside of us.

In the Dance of Likeness workshop, we are referring to traditional dances and music along these themes. The rich traditions will be used as an initial ground floor for our workshop journey. The traditional dances and songs confronted with our postmodern society will meet in one open pot. What can be the outcome? We are looking forward to encounters with a wide spectrum of traditions brought by participants themselves. We will meet in a place where our body and voice grow in their freedom and limits, in their spontaneity and calculations, in their chaos and order, on a journey towards a deeper understanding of ourselves.

This work session is targeted towards practitioners with an interest and experience in theatre, dance or physical performance. It is open to both professional actors and dancers willing to explore less common fields of physical expression. This challenge requires serious focus and precision from all engaged in the work.

The workshop will be held in English with Matej Matejka, Sam Alty and members of Studio Matejka. As the practice is based on the platform of listening and communication through the body and intuitive experience, verbal explanation will be kept to a minimum.
